dressing to a “t”

We love to dress up, but we also like to be comfortable. Fortunately, the quintessential dressed up California look is casual cool. California is an extremely casual place, and the way we dress reflects our laid back lifestyle quite a bit. One wardrobe item we love to wear casually and more formally is the classic t-shirt. There are so many ways to wear a t-shirt, but believe it or not, when styled right you can wear it out for a night on the town! We love dressing up our t-shirts, so we thought we’d share some of our favorite tips:

Statement Necklace:

We are loving conversation t-shirts right now, and there are so many cute ones out there! This one is from Banana Republic; we love the fit and fabric. They have several other amazingly cute conversation t’s right now! You can also find some cute ones at J.Crew, Aritzia and Shopbop. A plain t-shirt can instantly look more glamorous with a sparkly statement necklace. The key is to pair your necklace with a crew neck t-shirt so that the neckline intersects with the drape of the necklace. We actually layered four of our own necklaces to create this look, but Bauble Bar and Stella & Dot have some fabulous affordable options, like this pearl bib,  this silver and stone bib and this gold and stone necklace.

sequin skirt

Anything looks instantly glamorous when paired with sequins, especially a t-shirt! We found this tee at Everlane and the sequins skirt at Express (you may remember it from our holiday party post). You can pair a t-shirt with almost anything sequins: a skirt, pants, a scarf or a jacket…they all work! The key is to pick a piece that fits well and flatters your body type.

Bright Jacket:

A bright jacket can add a tremendous amount of polish to a great fitting plain white tee. This American Apparel t-shirt fit us both very well and is incredibly soft! The red sweater jacket is one from Banana Republic that Ashley’s had for years, but they have a fiery red Moto Jacket right now. Red isn’t the only color that pairs well with a plain white tee, Zara has a fabulous kelly green blazer and Piperlime a great pink boyfriend blazer.

Pencil skirt and Statement Belt:

Another one of our favorite ways to up the ante on a classic t-shirt is to pair it with a sexy pencil skirt and a bold, waist-cinching belt. The key to this look is to go easy on the necklaces, as the belt is the main feature. You may recognize this black lace skirt from our denim shirt post. Sadly it’s no longer available, but pencil skirts are everywhere, so have your pick! This is our favorite belt from Brave Leather, but Anthropologie and ASOS have amazing options as well!

Classic Black Blazer:

We love how this Banana Republic conversation tee and white jeans give a little edge to a conservative black blazer. By adding some eye-popping jewelry with a rocker flair this t-shirt is ready for dinner with the girls. Black blazers are a dime a dozen, but we love this tuxedo style from Zara, and this cut-away blazer from Banana Republic.

Knit Jacket:

A brightly printed, knit jacket can look like it jumped out of your grandmother’s closet, but when paired with a simple, white t-shirt it looks edgy and fresh! It can also add the perfect amount of class to an outfit that would otherwise be completely casual. We love to pair our boucle jacket with a bright belt and our favorite boyfriend jeans. This boucle number is an old one from H & M, but we love this embroidered jacket and this striped blazer from Zara, and this blue striped jacket from Joie.

Here’s to a supremely chic and comfortable night on the town!

Happy shopping!
